| Jerry DeMuth has been freelancing, even when holding full-time jobs, since his college years.
After graduation from Southern Illinois University, he worked as an editor at a paperback book company. He wrote magazine and newspaper features on social, civil liberty and civil rights issues while working with the American Friends Service Committee and then the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. One article from then has twice been anthologized, most recently in Library of America’s Reporting Civil Rights: Part Two.
He has also contributed to a Down Beat magazine best-of collection, a business anthology and several mortgage banking technology books for the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA).
DeMuth was a reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times for 12 years and also wrote freelance film, music, food, travel and social issue features as well as book and film reviews for the Sun-Times and other newspapers and magazines. He taught full-time in a summer program for graduate students at Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, where he began his college years on the wrong foot as an engineering major.
He was founding editor of a retail music instrument magazine and part-time editor of a Chicago small-business publication for 13 years. He was a part-time correspondent/reporter for National Catholic Reporter; Religion News Service; The National Thrift News; AFX News , a business news service run by Financial Times and Agence France Presse; and MortgageDaily.com.
DeMuth has been a full-time freelance writer since 1979, and has won best-article awards from the Catholic Press Association, Cincinnati Editors Association, Chicago Newspaper Guild and the National Association of Mortgage Brokers (NAMB).
His photos of blues musician Sleepy John Estes have appeared on three CD releases.
His enjoyments include music (classical and jazz); film; modern dance; and travel--especially France with spouse Rosemary Gooden, a lecturer at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary and contributor to numerous books and journals.
DeMuth is based in Chicago. He can be reached at demuth933@earthlink.net.
