Mortgage Banking Magazine Contributors

Tom LaMalfa
Economist

Tom LaMalfa has been working in the mortgage research business for the past 30-plus years as an economist, analyst, adviser and author. He has been a student of housing economics since his undergraduate days at the University of Wisconsin, and earned a master’s degree at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

His career, along with a continuing fascination with the wholesale mortgage banking model, began at MGIC Investment Co. After 11 years, he moved on to North American Mortgage Co., where he served as director of economic research. In 1989, he headed to Cleveland to take a job as president of Asset Backed Capital Research, an investment banking subsidiary of Ohio Savings Bank, where he studied wholesale mortgage banking.

In the spring of 1991, LaMalfa and economist David Olson set up Wholesale Access Research & Consulting, a boutique mortgage research firm that catered to lenders, especially wholesalers. Wholesale Access provided research to a clientele of major banks that dominated the mortgage origination and finance business. Currently LaMalfa is a consultant based in Shaker Heights, Ohio.

He has authored dozens of articles over the years, and writes a monthly column, “Mortgage Corner,” in a well-known industry newsletter. He is a lifelong member of the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) and the Greater Cleveland MBA.

LaMalfa and his wife, Carol, have two grown children. A lifelong runner until recently, he enjoys family, reading, politics, music and people.
