| Former Chairman of the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA)
| John M. Robbins, CMB, has worked in the mortgage banking industry since 1972. Most notably, he founded American Residential Mortgage Corporation. American Residential Mortgage grew to become one of the nation’s largest independent mortgage banks prior to its sale to Chase Bank in 1994. He also founded American Residential Investment Trust Inc. in 1997, and American Mortgage Network (AmNet) in 2001 prior to its sale to Wachovia Bank in 2005. Robbins is a past chairman of the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA), a position that required he testify before Congress on the housing and finance crisis on numerous occasions in 2007. He is currently serving his sixth term on MBA’s Board of Directors. He has chaired MBA’s Presidents Conference, Legislative Committee, Board of Director’s Technology Steering Committee (BoDTech), and served two terms as chairman of MBA’s Membership and Dues Committee. He has also served on MBA’s Investment Committee, was a member of its Board of Governors from 1992 through 1995, and is a member of the Mortgage Bankers Legion.
Robbins has served two terms on Fannie Mae’s National Housing Advisory Council and has served on its Western Regional Advisory Board. He is also chairman of the Policy Advisory Board for the University of San Diego’s Burnham-Moores Center for Real Estate, a position he has held since 1994. He is a regular contributor to the Executive Suite series for Mortgage Banking magazine.
He assisted in the founding of Neighborhood National Bank, San Diego’s first inner-city economic development bank, and served as its first chairman from 1993 to 1998. He was a director of Garden Fresh Restaurant Corporation until its sale, Accredited Home Lenders, and Pacific Research & Engineering Corporation prior to its sale to Harris Corporation in 1999. Robbins is currently a trustee of The University of San Diego.
Robbins has served on the board of the Old Globe Theatre (president from 1998-2000) and, in 1999, served as president of the Century Club of San Diego and general chairman of the Buick Invitational of California, one of the PGA’s winter tour events. He has served on the boards of the Child Abuse Prevention Foundation, the Polinsky Children’s Center, the YMCA of San Diego County and the San Diego Chamber of Commerce. He was also the first executive director of the San Diego Host Committee to the Republican National Convention in 1995 and 1996.
Robbins served with the U.S. Army Security Agency from 1966 to 1970. As a result of his service, he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal and the Good Conduct Medal, and has earned the Korean Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the National Defense Ribbon.
Robbins and his wife, Laura, reside in Rancho Santa Fe, California.
